Tom Aikens and his twin brother Robert, who now works with him, decided on culinary school "because you didn't need any exams to get in." Working for the best chefs — Joel Robuchon, Richard Neat, Pierre Koffman — he honed his palate and skills before becoming head chef at Pied a Terre. In an interview with Deborah Ross for The Independent, he said he'd never do cooking TV, like "Ready Steady Cook." "I would do TV if it were educational and insprirational but I'm not doing something that makes a mockery." He taped for Great Chefs Television while head chef at Pied a Terre.
Aikens left Pied a Terre under a well-publicized cloud, then slowly worked his way back into the business. Private catering contracts. A stint with the Bamford family who run Daylesford Organics from their farm in Gloucestershire. Then his own restaurant, Tom Aikens, where he's won Michelin stars. Now he's expanded with Tom's Kitchen, a brasserie, and Tom's Place, "fish and chips" of the finest sort. Tom's Place recently closed. Aikens' restaurants are in Chelsea Green.
